Since it’s the closing chapter, it kills whatever momentum the movie had going in. Nancy’s tale is both the weakest and most unnecessary, seemingly included just to give Alba a chance to improve on her iconic striptease. The second stretches the story of Nancy Callahan, Jessica Alba’s damsel-in-distress, who is drowning in sorrow and seeking to punish the powers that be for the death of Bruce Willis’s Hartigan.
The first involves a high-stakes gambler with a death wish played by Joseph Gordon-Levitt, who has just the right mix of charisma and edge to blend in with Sin City’s hard-boiled residents. But this time the duo throw two brand new plots into the mix.
In A Dame To Kill For, Robert Rodriguez (with Miller credited as co-director once again) faithfully renders the comic book’s tales of deceit and revenge as if he were quoting scripture. This sequel-prequel combo has epic highs and joyless lows, the wicked humour of the original being the most sorely missed aspect. Time has not faded Frank Miller’s striking visuals. Sin City’s lurid, monochromatic palette – with violent splashes of red – is back on the big screen after a nine-year hiatus.
